Homemade Holiday Eggnog

I am so so excited to share this recipe with you!  This Homemade Holiday Eggnog from My Man’s Grandma B. who is almost 100 years old and IT IS THE BEST EGGNOG on the planet!  My Man makes it every year for Christmas Eve (and sometimes New Year’s too).  It’s got ice cream and it’s so fresh and delicious . . . it goes perfectly with your frosted sugar cookies . . . loaded with sprinkles, of course.

My Man has been making this since our first year of marriage (17 years!) So My Man and I are gonna show you how to make this vintage, crowd-pleasing, homemade eggnog.  People who don’t normally like eggnog, usually end up liking this stuff.  It’s creamy and not too “eggy”, if you know what I mean. It’s actually quite simple too.  So don’t worry, you can do this.

These are the products we always use.  You can use other brands of course, buy My Man swears these ones are the best.  Here’s what you need:

6 fresh eggs with a good freshness date (no old eggs–ever!)
1/4 tsp ground cloves
1/4 tsp of ginger
1/4 tsp of Allspice
a sprinkle of nutmeg
1/4 cup of sugar (optional, you may think it’s sweet enough already)
2 quarts of orange juice
1 liter of lemon-lime soda pop
1/2 gallon of vanilla ice cream

var r = document.URL;

First thing to do is inspect your eggs.  There must be absolutely NO CRACKS or dried egg goop from another egg.  Never use old eggs.  Old eggs are very at risk for salmonella.  This is important to avoid getting sick.

Next, gently wash you eggs in soapy warm water.  We use anti-bacterial soap as an extra precaution.  Rinse and dry them.

TIP: you can use 1 quart of eggnog from the store if you want.  Or you can try Egg Beaters from the store.  It’s not quite the same, but still good.

Put the eggs, all the spices, the sugar, and the orange juice (as much juice as you can fit) into your blender.

This is basically the blender we have.  IT’S AWESOME!
We’ve had it for 16 years and it’s still going strong!!!!

Mix thoroughly.

TIP:  If you need to make this part ahead of time, you can omit the eggs and just mix the juice, sugar, and spices and store it in the fridge until your holiday event.  Right before you are ready to serve the eggnog, blend this mixture with the eggs and continue with the steps below.
Next, pour all your soda into a large punch bowl.  Putting soda pop in first helps keep the frothiness down.

Then pour in all of your egg/juice mixture.

This is what it looks like so far . . . we’re almost done.

The last step is to add the whole carton of ice cream by the scoopful.  Use the entire carton (I promise!).  The ice cream will eventually melt in about an hour or so.
TIP: Depending on how you like it, you can wait for it to melt or start enjoying right away.  We like the chunky bits of ice cream.  But no matter what, make sure you add the ice cream close to serving time.

And that’s it!  You are done!

Here’s the difference between the chunky version and the melted version.  Both are very very good.

Everyone loves this EGGNOG.  Seriously.
