Getting to Waimea Valley

To get to Waimea Waterfall, visitors will need to find themselves in the the North Shore area of Oahu, Hawaii.  It is located at 59-864 Kamehameha Hwy Haleiwa, HI 96712.  From Honolulu you can take a bus, or rent a car like we did. Shuttle transportation is available from Hale Ho’ike to Waimea Falls. The first shuttle starts at 10:00 AM. Shuttle ticket sales end 3:00 PM. One-way is $10 for each person.

We visited Waimea Valley while on our   Legendary North Shore Tour  from the Shaka Guide App.  This self-guided road trip app helped us as newcomers drive the north shore easily for our first time.  It even helped us find some delicious garlic shrimp after our visit.

When you get there you’ll enjoy a leisurely walk through lush greenery and along flowing streams. The trail to the waterfall is surrounded by vibrant flora and fauna, offering a peaceful and picturesque journey to this natural wonder. As you make your way towards the waterfall, the soothing sounds of nature will guide you through the serene landscape, setting the perfect tone for the magical experience that awaits, so it’s worth figuring out a way to get there!

Shaka Guide App North Shore Tour

As I mentioned above, experience the enchanting beauty of Waimea Waterfall in Oahu, Hawaii by immersing yourself in the lush botanical garden, taking a refreshing dip in the crystal-clear waters, and engaging in Hawaiian cultural activities and use the SHAKA GUIDE APP to help you navigate the North Shore of Oahu as you get there. The Shaka Guide in my opinion is the best way to experience new places, like Hawaii.  They have several self-guided tours for many awesome vacation and sight-seeing locations.

I first tried Shaka Guide with my husband on a whim when we drove the Road to Hana in Maui.  WE LOVED IT! It made our experience so special and we did not waste time figuring out what to do or where to stop.  Directions are very detailed, including where to park and where the closest restrooms are along the way.  It also has stories, music, and interesting facts along the way.  I loved it so much I have used it many times since and finally became an affiliate for Shaka Guide because I’m always talking about them.

Here are just a few of the fun things you can do on the North Shore tour!

• Visit an ancient Hawaiian Heiau
• Eat garlic shrimp in Kahuku and shave ice in Haleiwa
• Go on the Pineapple Express and try a Dole Whip at the Dole Plantation
• Cliff jump at Waimea Bay
• Watch surfers at Banzai Pipeline

Waimea Valley Tickets and Important Info

Okay, now let’s chat about the important ins and outs about Waimea Valley.  The Waimea park opens at 9:00 am and generally closes at 4:00 pm (except during the summer it is open until 5:00 pm). Tickets cost ranges from $10-$25 dollars depending on your age and status.  It may sound a little pricey to go see a waterfall in Hawaii, but here’s the thing–it’s a great place for kids and elderly because they have life jackets and lifeguards, AND it is more than just a waterfall.

Waimea tickets also include the botanical gardens, clean restrooms, cultural activities and Hawaiian History, and snack bars, places to eat, and a gift shop.  It’s not as immersive or magical as the Polynesian Cultural Center (which is kinda the big mama of all Hawaiian cultural activities on Oahu North Shore), but it is a GREAT way to spend an afternoon with the family and see a waterfall at the same time.

Parking is free at Waimea and is part of your paid ticket.  The park is handicap friendly.  There are guided tours you can book at Waimea Valley if you want to go that route.  Contact the park for more info.

Here’s some other good tips to know about Waimea Valley:

  1. It can get very crowded.  Earlier is better
  2. Bring a towel and possibly clothes to change into after the falls
  3. Bring good shoes for walking the paved trail and navigating the slippery rocks by the falls
  4. They have restrooms and changing rooms
  5. Lifeguard is on duty
  6. Life Jackets are required for entry into the pool or falls

Exploring the Waimea Botanical Garden

The first thing you’ll enjoy as you start on the the trail to Waimea Waterfall, you will come across the enchanting Waimea Botanical Garden. This hidden gem showcases a diverse collection of tropical plants and flowers, adding a burst of color and fragrance to your journey.  We strolled through the garden and admired the unique species of flora that thrive in area, providing a tranquil experience in nature. We had Grandma and Grandpa with us and they enjoyed this leisurely walk just as much as my girls.  We took so many pictures of tropical flowers!  Each twist and turn reveals a new botanical wonder, preparing you for the refreshing oasis of Waimea Waterfall that awaits just around the corner.

What is the Waimea Waterfall Like?

After enjoying the walk through the Botanical Garden, you’ll find yourself nearing the waterfall .  You’ll be tempted to take a refreshing dip in the cool waters of Waimea Waterfall. The crystal-clear pool at the base of the waterfall called to us for sure!  We wanted to swim in that waterfall and enjoy the pool right away.  We got our life jackets from the lifeguard (all those who enter the pool must wear a life jacket), and even Grandma wanted to join in.

We were at Waimea in December, and it was early morning when we arrived.  The pool was definitely chilly to start.  It took a minute to get used to but after moving around and swimming over to the falls were feeling a lot better.  It was so refreshing! Grandpa decided to stay on the sidelines and just enjoy the beauty and take pictures for us. There are benches for viewers to sit on as they wait and enjoy the view.  Restrooms and changing rooms are nearby the falls if you need to change before or after your dip in the water.

Swimming at Waimea falls is dependent on daily waterfall conditions. Lifeguards make the swim call for the day at 9am.  Call (808) 638-7766 for swimming status. *Hours are subject to change.

Whether you choose to swim, splash around, or simply dip your toes in the water, the experience of being surrounded by the cascading falls and lush greenery is truly unforgettable. So go ahead, take a moment to cool off and rejuvenate in the natural wonder of Waimea Waterfall before continuing your journey through this enchanting paradise.

Hawaiian Cultural Activities at Waimea Valley

After our beautiful swim in the Waimea Waterfall, we strolled back to the entrance and enjoyed the cultural activities on the way.  The sun easily dried us as we walked around.  Immersing in Hawaiian Cultural Activities can further enhance your appreciation of the rich heritage and traditions of this captivating destination and I highly recommend you taking a some time to check it out.  By participating in cultural experiences, like learning the ukelele, and blowing a horn through a conch shell.  We gained a deeper understanding of the land, its people, and the significance of Waimea Waterfall within the context of Hawaiian history.  I encourage you to embrace the opportunity to immerse yourself in the traditions that have shaped this island paradise. Create lasting memories that will stay with you long after you leave.

Don’t miss this opportunity to create unforgettable memories in this tropical paradise. Pack your swimsuit, plan your trip, and get ready to witness the magic of Waimea Waterfall for yourself. As the Hawaiian proverb says, “He ali’i ka ‘aina, he kauwa ke kanaka” – The land is chief, man is its servant.

I went with my nieces and nephews and it was VERY BUSY! (like Disneyland busy). We arrived about 11 am and every parking lot was completely full and side streets were filling fast. Needless to say we had to walk a bit in the heat just to get to the front gate. There were lines to get in, lines, at snack shops, and definitely a line for the train. BUT we saw some animals—-lions, tigers, bears (oh my!)…plus giraffes, zebras, and a leopard. It was definitely worth $8.01 but it’s not for the faint of heart. A fun adventure! #hoglezoo #801day #familyactivities #hoglezooutah 🐒🐅🦒🐘🦓
