How to use a Thermacell Mosquito Protection Lantern

Remember how I was frustrated with all the mosquitoes in our area?  We had them biting like crazy even in the earliest part of the evening.  We live near a large lake and sometimes the mosquitoes are unbearable.  So I’m ready to try whatever I can to help keep them away.  I tried the Thermacell Patio Shield Mosquito Protection Lantern.  Thermacell sent me this lantern to try and share my experience with you (and also a discount–see below!).

The Thermacell Mosquito Lantern says it provides a 15×15 foot zone of protection from mosquitoes, black flies, and other flying insects.  It’s an LED light that uses 3 AAA batteries to work.  The lantern is silent.  There is no open flame and I did not notice any fumes either.  You can use the light with or without the repellent.

The lantern I got came with 3 repellent mats.  This is what actually repels the bugs, not the light.

You simply place one mat inside the top of the lantern as pictured above (it’s the blue thing under the grill).  The mats turn from blue to white when the repellent is exhausted.  Each mat lasts about 4 hours.

Each lantern comes with butane also.  This little cartridge fits inside the lantern.  This butane activates the repellent when you start it up.  You can see a small amount of movement in the air above the repellent grill when it is working, thus providing you with some mosquito protection.  We used it in our backyard and seemed to go without any mosquito bites that night.  I am taking it camping soon and will let you know how it works there also. Thermacell products have been recognized by leading entomologists and outdoor writers as the solution to making outdoor activities enjoyable.  The butane cartridge is said to last about 12 hours each.

I had the smallest lantern available.  It retails for about $20 and it’s about the size of my 23 oz water bottle.  They have bigger sizes and repellent and butane refill packs available on their website.

I would love for you to try it out and let me know what you think.

Has anyone else used one of these lanterns?

About Lisa Jorgensen

I was hit by an intoxicated driver when I was walking on the sidewalk. I was also 6 months pregnant at the time. I learned a huge lesson about miracles and not taking life for granted. I believe in finding the good and making life blissful with family, food, and fun ideas. Every moment matters.
