Our experience staying at the Cabins in Canyon Lodge in Yellowstone National Park
Yellowstone is one of my very favorite National Parks. Finding a good place to stay in Yellowstone Park though is not so fun. Have you wondered what it’s like to stay at the Canyon Village in Yellowstone? There are many different options for accommodations at Canyon Village, but we recently stayed at the Cabins at Canyon Lodge located in Canyon Village. Here’s our unsponsored, honest review of these classic cabins.

Our Experience
We have traveled to Yellowstone many times and have shared with you some great Yellowstone tips for traveling with kids in the past. In fall of 2025, my husband and I traveled without kids through Yellowstone.
We stopped for a night at Canyon Village–one of the best villages in Yellowstone. We love the restaurants there, especially The Canyon Fountain and Grill inside of the Canyon General Store. It’s got a 50’s soda fountain vibe and plenty of comfort food to enjoy.

BUT we found the Cabins at Canyon Lodge to be not what we expected. This was our first stay in them, and frankly after many trips to Yellowstone and seeing these cozy, retro cabins as we drove through the park, I had hoped to one day stay in them and experience the magic of the Yellowstone of yesteryear. But as I said, our stay was not what we expected at all . . .

Are the Cabins at Canyon Lodge in Yellowstone Worth Staying In?
Well, the quick answer is NO, but also YES. I know that is confusing but hear me out.
First of all, it’s hard to find good info on the internet about these cabins. You really don’t know what you are getting into. For us we found the cabins, cozy enough and full of enough amenities to sleep for a night and get a good shower.

However, our particular room (and I’m guessing many others) had a horrible smell when we entered the room late at night. We toughed it out and opened the door trying to air it out. In the end, we finally fell asleep. The next morning found out that smell was BLACK MOLD all over the window inside the bathroom. Not just a little, but ALOT. It was disconcerting to think we had spent the whole night breathing in the black mold spores.

We complained to the staff about the black mold and they were VERY KIND about it. They ended up compensating half our money back, which was nice. But still . . . have they cleaned the black mold out? Does it easily return? These are OLD cabins . . . for quite a hefty price.
But I can still see there may be reasons you could want to stay at these cabins. It’s probably best to just give you a quick list of pros and cons so you can decide for yourself.
Pros for Staying in the Cabins at Canyon Lodge
- It’s a very convenient place to stay inside Yellowstone Park. There is also other accommodations available at Canyon Lodge, but it is often completely full (as it was in our case). AND it is not cheap. So think ahead and wisely as you make this decision.
- It’s near a few restaurants, and store, and other conveniences at Canyon Village.
- The rooms have a retro walk out patio that looks right into the forest.
- The beds are okay and the rooms are mostly clean (except for the black mold issue).
- It has a warm shower and hairdryer/shampoo/soap/towels, so there’s no need to bring that.
- The staff is friendly and helpful for the most part.
Cons for Staying in the Cabins at Canyon Lodge
- They are VERY pricey for what you get. You will pay around $500 per night at any given time of the year (sometimes less, but it’s rare). For that price, you may want to rethink your choices.
- They are very old. These cabins have been around a long time and could use some better maintenance–ie. the black mold we encountered.
- Nothing luxury about them, except you do have warm water and heat.
- There is no air conditioning, no TV, no radio, no telephone. But don’t worry they give you a fan. And coffee.
- You can hear the people in the rooms next to you.
- You could end up with black mold–so check your room before you go to sleep.

Anyway, it’s up to you if you decide it’s worth taking a chance on these cabins. If you can get a room inside the newer lodges (built in 2016) then go for it! Hopefully, this helps you as you travel in Yellowstone.
