Are Home Science Kits Worth the Money?

We tried a home science kit and give you all the info on these new science kits.  Here’s what’s included in a home science kit from Generation Genius, and what to look for to get the best value in a science kit.

Home science kits are becoming more and more popular these days.  Ever since Covid, families have taken home-learning to a whole new level.  So how do you know if a home science kit is worth the money?  Have you heard of Generation Genius yet?  Well, if you haven’t heard, Generation Genius is currently the fastest-growing private education company in the US and is on the Inc 5000 list.  Their science resources are used in over 30,000 schools across the nation–ask your kids if they have heard of Dr. Jeff, and chances are they will know who he is.  My daughter and her friends are very familiar with Dr. Jeff, who is a major part of the Generation Genius kits.  Last year Generation Genius launched home science kits ideal for kids ages 9-13. Every month they send three fun and safe experiments. These aren’t the same lame science experiments you’ve seen over and over; these are the most incredible science experiments that will undoubtedly inspire budding scientists!  Since I love hands on activities, we decided to try one of these home science kits and tell you if it’s worth the money and what to look for!  Here’s what to expect from a home science kit from Generation Genius.

How are home science kits useful for kids and families?

First of all, let’s talk about if a home science kit is a good idea for your family and what to look for in a kit.  How are home science kits useful to kids and why do you need them?  Kids are smarter than ever these days, and as parents and teachers, we are finding that many kids learn best when learning is combined with hands-on experiences.  Science kits are an awesome way to bring the lessons of science to life, and here’s some good things to look for in a kit:

  • They provide hands-on experiences for kids

  • They enhance learning with screen-free activities

  • They are easy to use and perfect for beginners

  • They often can be combined with videos and other book-learning to solidify a concept

  • They can be delivered right to your door

  • They come with all the supplies you need

  • They come with instructions and how-to information–no extra research needed!

  • They are FUN and provide a screen-free activity for kids and parents to do together.

  • Clean up is EASY and set up is fast and user-friendly

Are home science kits worth the money?

I’ve wondered if it’s worth spending money on home science kits or if I should just try to put together my own.  I’m a big DIYer and so it’s hard for me to want to spend money on things I may be able to do myself.  When my daughter and I opened up our first box of Generation Genius science kits, my daughter was already very familiar already with the Generation Genius science super star host “Dr. Jeff” because she has seen his videos at school many times.  This company has already been in schools for awhile now and they are already trusted by teachers across the U.S.A.  According to their website, Generation Genius is a K-8 teaching resource that brings school science standards to life through fun and educational videos paired with lesson plans, activities, quizzes, reading material and more. Their videos are produced in partnership with the National Science Teaching Association, and aligned to standards in all 50 states.  Their website also has TONS of FREE science and math videos!

None of the Experiments in Their Science Kits Are Harmful When Used As Directed.  Dr. Jeff’s science kits are made in accordance with the regulations for chemistry sets by the US Consumer Safety Commission. Your first kit includes 3% hydrogen peroxide, found in a first aid kit. Calcium Lactate Gluconate, found in vitamins, and Sodium Alginate which is found in seaweed.  This was a big plus for me because I’m not sure I know enough about science to make sure everything I do is safe–so it’s nice to have the experts make sure these are safe before they even arrive at your door.  Definitely worth the money!

Additionally, I have to say EVERYTHING we found in our kit was HIGH QUALITY and so EASY to use!  I knew right away that this was a good company to get a home science kit from.  I felt like it was safe to use and that I didn’t have to worry about us blowing up the house or burning anything. The Generation Science Kit was delivered right to our home and it came with 3 fun hands-on experiments.  I love that it is not just one experiment, but that we have the option to have 3 different experiences.  These 3 experiments were so fun that my daughter and I actually enjoyed playing with our science stuff for a couple of hours!  And did I mention that my daughter is 15?  We had a blast!

Other home activity kits to look for are:

  • DIY craft kits for kits
  • busy boxes for kids
  • building kits for kids
  • garden kits

What we liked about our Generation Genius science kit:

Well, it turns out that I have nothing bad to say about our Generation Genius home science kit.  Guys, WE LOVED IT!  I’m not kidding!  It was so much fun to do on a lazy Saturday afternoon!  Instead of just laying around and watching TV, we had fun learning and interacting together.  Totally worth the money for this reason alone!  We ended up doing our experiments together and we did them all in a row, but you could totally break it up and do each experiment on different days.  Our experiments not only were fun to mix and pour and measure, but they were fun to play with over and over again.  Here’s what we loved:

  • Fun to play with–each experiment had serious science that was FUN to play with over and over

  • Visually appealing–our experiments were beautiful to look at with so many colors!

  • Fun to touch — our experiments were fun to touch with so many textures

  • Easy to understand–The instructions are very clear with articles, pictures, and videos

  • Fascinating to watch the science in action–everything had that “WOW factor” that made it very fun

  • Bottle of chemical were clearly labeled as how to handle them, and also explained fun facts about them

  • Mats were included for the “messier” experiments making clean up very easy

  • There was enough for 2 of us to do together–it was a fun partner activity and could also be fun on your own

  • High quality tools, and safety equipment are included–everything is well-made.

How do Generation Genius kit subscriptions work?

First, choose your science kit subscription plan.  Plans start as low as $39.95 for the 6 month plan which includes FREE SHIPPING. This is the best deal out there and in my opinion it is very reasonably priced for a subscription kit of this quality and usefulness. Seriously, go and compare and you’ll see this is fairly priced.  You can also get a 3 month plan with FREE SHIPPING for $44.95 per month or a monthly kit for $49.95 plus the cost of shipping.  Second, realize you can cancel or adjust your plan at anytime, which to me is very important in a subscription plan because life changes happen, right?  Third, they have a 30 day money-back guarantee, so if you are not satisfied with your Generation Genius Science kits for any reason, simply contact them (within 30 days of joining) and they will promptly send you a refund, no hassle!  So if you are in the market for a good science kit for kids, this one gets our 5 star review.  Go check them out!

It was a miracle how they found him. He was about my age so it made an impression on me. Now this true story has been made into a movie called Faith of Angels. @faithofangelsfilm

Did you go to 801 Day at @hoglezoo in Utah? Ticket Did you go to 801 Day at @hoglezoo in Utah? Tickets were only $8.01 on 8/01 and the zoo opened at 8:01 am.
I went with my nieces and nephews and it was VERY BUSY! (like Disneyland busy). We arrived about 11 am and every parking lot was completely full and side streets were filling fast. Needless to say we had to walk a bit in the heat just to get to the front gate. There were lines to get in, lines, at snack shops, and definitely a line for the train. BUT we saw some animals—-lions, tigers, bears (oh my!)…plus giraffes, zebras, and a leopard. It was definitely worth $8.01 but it’s not for the faint of heart. A fun adventure! #hoglezoo #801day #familyactivities #hoglezooutah 🐒🐅🦒🐘🦓
